Viva paper test
I thought it would be important to do a test of different typefaces
set up was identicle to self promotional piece, printed at 600pt onto newsprint, cut out, then taped to the washing line with pegs weighing them down
as discussed earlier i agreed to do the BA (Hons) illustration 2010 in Rockwell condensed which with match the metal type name tags
however, almost instantly when i got the letters on the line and began photographing them, the slab serifed letters became almost illegible, and just simply did not the have right aesthetic - i'm going to return to the trade gothic font that i used for my self promotional pieces
more successful however was the ¡VIVA! logo done as a paper cut, when caught in the wind it created excellent flowing shapes, and almost sequential imagery.

Identity meeting
Important meeting with Pete, Ceri and Jonny to sort out a final masterplan of which direction the ideintity is going to go in . In particular Peter, who had not seen the work i had been doing ver the previous weeks went through
final plan was to use the metal type as name tags (see previous post), get a rubber stamp made of the ¡VIVA! logo
Peter's brief for now was to recreate my self promotion image of paper letters on a clothesline - this time reading 'BA (Hons) Illustration 2010', the resulting image will then serve as a wraparound catalogue cover- sketch above is of how the line will be set up.
Unable to (easily) create three line set up myself , wea re going to organise a shoot by biuling a fake clothes line and have several helpers hold each line up in across in East park which the university overlooks (thisi s also where our illustation 2010 group photo is going to be taken next thursday)
Catalgue cover
Rubber stamp
name tags
poster
Ceri is liasing with Amy, the catalogue deisgner and will be getting the final sizes and bleed areas neccessary for the cover
Jonny will be providing the materials for the clothesline (plastic clothsline pegs etc) and getting a rubber stamp made of the¡VIVA! logo.
and Pete will help me roganise a small group on thursday to go over to the park and help after the group photo.

Cyanotype Argyrotype workshop
Excellent and productive day where i attended Rosy's Cynanotype and Argyrotype workshop where we coated Somerset printmaking paper with photosensitive chemicals, then exposing either laser printed acetates (as large contact printed negatives negatives) or objects (as photograms) in direct sunlight
The Argyrotype has an excellent toned vintage feel and the Cyanotype a classic alternative process quality.
It's a process i've never done before, although much of the tecnique was similar to traditional darkroom printmaking - i'm very happy with some of the results, many could appear as part of my degree show.
Rosy will be repeating the workshop in two weeks on the 10th of May.

prep
I used today to do some more experimentations, taking wood letters and photographing outside, waterslide letters floating and swirling in water etc.
completed another roll of black and white film so i have a set of negatives in preperation for the Cyanotype workshop tomorrow - i finished off the roll in town using my telephoto lens on my Canon EOS300 to get dramatic close-ups of three-dimensional shop signage. Contact prints of the two films are below.
One downside of today is that i managed to crack my lens protector.

Material Experimentation - Ice
The experiments of freezing my woodblocks in ice, then breaking them out to leave the impress have been for an editorial piece entitled 'Swallowed by the Sea'
This set was very successful, i managed to get a very strong set of pictures - the text is legible and using my 60mm macro lens really brought out the texture of the frost and the odd swell that froze in the margerine tub

catalogue images
Two things today, Ceri gave a useful talk as part of the week of degree show workshops about postcard and business card printing, but the rest of the day was spent putting together the requiremeents of the catalogue - selecting and confirming images, writing statement, portrait photos etc.
Not happy with any recent work, and the identity work still in process, I chose to use the theatre poster from february and then a grid of images from the self promo project - much like how they are displayed in flickr.
